How to Transfer a Florida Title

How to Transfer Ownership in a Private Sale

Please follow the steps below to transfer a Florida title for vehicles, vessels, and mobile homes purchased in a private sale.  The seller can request a paper title online, in person, or by mail.

Note: If the sale was conducted at a dealership in Florida, car dealerships are required to apply for title and registration on the purchaser’s behalf.

Step 1: Seller Transfers Title to Purchaser's Name

The seller must transfer ownership to the purchaser by filling out the "Transfer of Title by Seller" section of the Florida title. The seller and purchaser must complete the following fields:

  • Purchaser’s Full Name and Address;
  • Selling Price and Date of Sale;
  • Odometer Reading at Time of Purchase;
  • Seller’s Signature and Name; and
  • Purchaser’s Signature and Name, and Names of Any Co-Owners.

Step 2: Seller Removes the Tag

The seller should remove the tag (license plate) from the sold vehicle and surrender the tag (if applicable).

Step 3: Purchaser Visits the Tax Collector's Office

The purchaser is encouraged to make an appointment to visit the Orange County Tax Collector’s office to submit paperwork and pay the taxes and fees. It's not required for the seller to be present, but it is recommended.

Note: The State of Florida collects a 6% sales tax on the sale price of the vehicle, minus any trade-in for vehicles purchased through a dealer.

Step 4: While at the Tax Collector's Office

The purchaser must be present. Also, any new co-owners listed on the title must be present too, or they can complete a Power of AttorneyHaving the seller present is not necessary, but recommended.
