Big News for Florida CDL Drivers: A Simpler Path to Renewing Your License!

Starting November 27, 2024, Florida is making it easier for commercial drivers to renew their Florida Commercial Driver’s Licenses (CDLs), supporting Governor Ron DeSantis’ efforts to address the growing need for CDL drivers across the state.

Here’s the scoop: If your Florida CDL has expired, you may no longer need to retake the exams to get back on the road!

What’s Changing?

Under current rules, Florida CDL drivers with licenses expired for more than a year are required to retake both the skills and knowledge exams. But starting November 27, that’s no longer the case—as long as there’s proof on your driving record that you’ve previously passed these exams.

So, if you:

  1. Previously held a Florida CDL.
  2. Have a record showing you passed the required exams.
  3. Meet all other licensing requirements.

You can renew your Florida CDL without the hassle of retesting!

Who Does This Apply To?

  • Eligible Drivers: Anyone with a previously held a Florida CDL (expired) and proof of passed exams.
  • Exceptions: If you only had a Florida Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) but never obtained a Florida CDL, you’ll still need to retake exams older than one year.

Why Does This Matter?

This change saves time and effort for experienced drivers, helping more Floridians get back to work behind the wheel. It’s all part of a broader push to support our transportation industry and ensure Florida has the drivers it needs to keep goods and services moving.
