From the Blog: Motorcycle and Bike Crashes in Florida

This month we recognized Motorcycle and Bicycle Awareness Month with the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, reminding Orange County drivers to share the road and help reduce traffic crashes, injuries and fatalities.

“The key is awareness,” said Orange County Tax Collector Scott Randolph. “Be aware that when you’re on the road, you’re driving alongside bicyclists, motorcyclists and even pedestrians. So it’s critical that we stay alert and share the road.”

According to data from DHSMV, there were more than 10,000 motorcycle crashes in Florida in 2016, including 627 crashes in Orange County – that’s a rate of nearly 19 crashes per 1,000 motorcycles registered in Orange County.

Here are the motorcycle crash statistics by county (top 10):

Rank County Crashes Incapacitating Injuries Fatalities
1 Miami-Dade 1110 188 37
2 Broward 820 187 30
3 Hillsborough 741 159 50
4 Orange  627 144 27
5 Pinellas 620 159 22
6 Palm Beach 559 103 30
7 Duval 538 112 27
8 Volusia 509 133 25

In 2016, there were 476 crashes involving bicyclists in Orange County and 91 bicycle crashes that resulted in an incapacitating injury – the highest in Florida.

And the age group statistics for bicycle fatalities might surprise you. According to DHSMV, “Although bicyclists age 15-19 had the highest number of bicycle crashes out of all the age groups, bicyclists age 50-59 had the highest number of fatalities from bicycle crashes with one-third of bicyclists killed in a crash in 2016.”
